9 BALL GOLDS HEAD TO GERMANY, NETHERLANDS AND ESTONIA

THE FINAL SINGLES discipline of the 2024 DYNAMIC BILLARDS European Youth Championships was played out in Podčetrtek, Slovenia this morning and it was Felix Vogel (GER), Jolien Schuurman (NED) and Revo Maimre (EST) who collected the gold medals.

In the Under 19 final, Vogel, who had won two bronzes in the earlier events, finally came good with a dominant 8-2 win over Finland’s Sasu Hietamies, while Jolien Schuurman got the better of 8-ball champion Linnea Hjalmarstrom by 6-4 to claim her first gold. The Under 17 match saw Revo Maimre and Maks Benko renew their rivalry, with the young Estonian coming out a 7-4 winner.

In the Under 19 match, Felix Vogel was certainly the form horse with a haul of three golds and a silver from previous events as well as a Euro Tour final earlier in the year. That proved to be the case as he cashed in on some tentative play from the Finn to open up a very comfortable 4-0 lead.

Again, Vogel was the first player with a good look in the fifth and there was no hesitation as he sped through the table to make it 5-0. Hietamies had his first real chance in the sixth but lost position travelling to the 6 ball. His attempted bank missed into the centre pocket left a difficult cut for Vogel who too missed. Sasu never quite had full control of his positional play but he had enough to get his first point on the board.

Hietamies had the initiative in the next and his safety on the 5 ball forced Vogel into a slightly unlucky scratch. However, with ball-in-hand, the Finn lost position travelling to the 6. His hit-and-hope left it open for Vogel who made it 6-1. With a chance to reach the hill, Vogel inexplicably missed a straight 8 ball and the score moved to 6-2.

Hietamies changed sides for the next break and it reaped dividends with two balls down. Just when he didn’t need it, he scratched, pocketing the 3 ball. Shedding any nerves he might have held over from the miss in the last, Vogel cleared up to reach the hill at 7-2.

Vogel went close with the 9 ball from the break, but he had a shot on the 1 ball, albeit with the jump cue. He made it and from there he ran out for his first gold medal of the championships.

At 17 years of age, it was Vogel’s first run in the Under 19 division and he came into the championships having played in the adults’ ECs as well as the recent Euro Tour event.

“It feels great and I’m very happy about it. This gold in the last discipline was very important as I had some problems with myself in the first disciplines maybe because I was not 100% fit but yes, I gave all my remaining power and I’m happy to make it.”

Bronze medals in 9-ball were won by Mykola Moroz of Ukraine and Matous Vlk of the Czech Republic.

Another player who has been mixing it in the adults division, as well as the Euro Tour, where she won last year, was Jolien Schuurman, who held off Linnea Hjalmarstrom to claim the 9-ball gold. Schuurman had taken silver in the 10-ball as well a bronze in the 8-ball and she overcame a tough opponent for the win.

Linnea was on a roll, having taken the gold in the previous event – 8-ball – and she opened up a 2-0 lead in the race-to-six match. Jolien, though came right back at her, winning five consecutive racks to put herself on the hill. Hjalmarstrom wasn’t done and piled on the pressure, winning the eighth and ninth games to get within one of Schuurman. The Dutch girl composed herself however, to clinch the next and seize the victory.

Commented Schuurman, “It feels amazing! After I got bronze and silver, I knew it had to be gold today so I did what I really wanted to do. We played two semi-finals against each other; the first one I won, the second one she won and this time it was the ultimate in the final.

“I know Linnea very well and I know she’s a very good player. It’s always going to be a tough match against each other. This morning, I knew there was a good chance that we would meet in the final and I knew I had to play my best game. It’s a big relief!” she added.

The two bronze medal winners were Shirin Volery (SUI) who added to her haul this week and Romina Lenk (GER, who also doubled her medal tally.

The Under 17 final was another rematch and this time it was Estonia’s Revo Maimre who ran out a winner over Maks Benko (SLO) by 7-4 to clinch his first gold of the tournament. The two had met in the 10-ball final with Benko proving the victor, but this time it was Maimre’s day in the sun.

As predicted, it was a close match with it all tied at 3-3 at the halfway stage. Revo, though, broke away to lead 5-3 before Benko made it tight by taking the next. However, Maimre took the next two for a tremendous victory and the 9-ball title.

Commented Revo, “I was feeling very well today. I woke up at 6.50 this morning, ate and came to the venue to practice. My best discipline is 10-ball but I lost to Maks and I was thinking that I had to beat Maks today and that’s what happened.”

Maimre will be joining Benko on the flight to New Zealand in September to compete in the Predator World Junior Championships. There was a Polish double on the podium as Michal Wiech and Wojciech Glab took the bronze medals.

IT’S 8 BALL GLORY FOR FINLAND, SWEDEN & SLOVENIA

THE 8-BALL MEDALS were determined this evening in Podčetrtek as three exciting finals unfolded at the DYNAMIC BILLARDS European Youth Championships. Two athletes claimed their second gold medals of the event – Riku Romppanen (FIN) and Maks Benko (SLO), while Linnea

Hjalmarström   (SWE) upgraded from the bronze she won at 10-ball. She

also won a spot in September’s Predator World Junior Championships.

The Under 19 final was a real clash of the junior heavyweights with Mika Van Berkel, with a gold and a silver already to his name, taking on Riku Romppanen, the 14.1 champion. It was a tremendous match which once again proved the saying that it’s never over until the final ball drops.

Romppanen got things underway but it was Van Berkel who took the opener and in the second, taking stripes, the young Dutchman cleared from the break to double his lead at 2-0. The Finn lost position in the next, trying to break up a two-ball cluster and subsequently missed the 10 ball into the centre pocket. The leave wasn’t the easiest for Van Berkel but he confidently cleared to give himself a 3-0 lead.

Van Berkel stayed on after his break but he too lost position and could not recover. Romppanen was in dire need of a prolonged stay, but he fouled on his first shot, scratching into  the centre pocket. Van Berkel looked to be out of luck but an outstanding bank shot kept him alive in the rack and it was soon 4-0.

Romppanen got his first rack on the board in the fifth as he cleared from the break. It was still a big ask but his confidence was certainly boosted. Van Berkel wasn’t hanging about though as he speedily ran through the table for a 5-1 lead

There was no margin for error now and Romppanen cleared from the break for 5-2 but he was now relying on errors from his opponent. They both had opportunities in the next but it was Van Berkel who closed it out to reach the hill at 6-2. Romppanen ran out from his break to get to one back but it was now Mika’s to lose.

Van Berkel dropped a stripe from his break and stayed on them. With no trouble ahead, he looked set for the win but glaringly, he missed the final 8-ball into the corner pocket. Romppanen cleared for 6-4 and stayed in the match.

The Finnish lad then took the next rack from the break and Van Berkel was now under pressure, breaking for the match with no margin for error.

A dry break was the last thing he needed and Romppanen had a chance to square the match on the hill. Full credit to Romppanen, he ran out and having looked dead and buried for most the match, was now breaking for the gold medal.

The break saw the cue ball roll up against the pink 12 with very few options available. He took a long time to decide but under the do-or-die circumstances it might have been the shot of the match as, with no cueing angle, he cut it into the centre pocket.

He went through a difficult table to leave himself a high-pressure 8 at an awkward angle into the middle pocket. Romppanen completed the task to win a crazy final and take the gold medal.

A delighted Riku said, “I’m really happy. He missed one 8 ball to keep me in it and I broke and ran all my racks. I never gave up despite being behind all the way and I’m hoping I can go on and win the 9-ball for three gold medals.”

Estonia’s Karl Gnadeberg and Mykola Moroz of Ukraine took the two bronze medals.

In the girls’ division, Sweden’s Linnea Hjalmarström completed the full set of gold medals as she overcame Oktawia Brodecka (Poland) by a 5-3 margin. She had previously won gold medals at 9 and 10-ball at the ECs in 2023. Linnea had trailed 1-2 in the early part of the match but won two frames to take the lead at 3-2 and from there, she never looked back.

Commented Linnea, “I’m really thankful for winning the 8-ball; in fact, it was quite frustrating that I didn’t win it last year. So, I’m really happy to have secured my spot in the World Championships and to have completed my hat-trick.

“I’m feeling really good for the 9-ball. I played a great match today and I love 9-ball so I’m going for a double. My goal was a triple but I would be really satisfied with that. I love to see all the new girls here and they’ve really impressed me playing at a high level,” she added.

For the two bronze medal winners – Shirin Volery (SUI) and Jolien Schuurman (NED) – it was their second podium finish this week.

The final gold medal of the day, in the In the Under 17 category, went to the irrepressible Maks Benko, who brought the home fans to life as he secured the second gold for Slovenia. He defeated Sweden’s Walter Laikre by 6-4 in a ding-dong match that saw Laikre take the early lead, relinquish it to Benko, regain it again at 4-3, then watch as Maks took the next three racks for victory.

The 14-year-old Benko had earlier won silver at straight pool and gold at 10-ball and he too will be on the long-haul flight to New Zealand in September.

Said Benko, “I’m very happy because I wouldn’t have imagined this before the tournament and I was so tired before the 8-ball and couldn’t imagine winning this title. I’ve won two out of three and the other was a second so I’m so happy with that.”

Today’s bronze medallists were Fabrizio Ingrasci of Germany and Poland’s Jakub Chrobot, who claimed his second medal of the championships.

Persbericht EPBF

NETHERLANDS, SWITZERLAND & SLOVENIA TAKE 10 BALL TITLES

AN EXCITING EVENING of 10-ball action saw gold medal-winning victories for Mika Van Berkel (NED), Shirin Volery (SUI) and Maks Benko (SLO). For both Van Berkel and Benko, who had both lost in the finals of the straight pool division two days ago, it was sweet redemption, while Volery won her first ever DYNAMIC BILLARD European Championship gold. For all three, there was a huge added bonus of a spot in the Predator World Junior Championships which take place in Hamilton, New Zealand from 2nd to 8th September.

In the Under 19 match, Van Berkel faced talented Serbian Lazar Kostic for the title and it was the Serbian who got things rolling after winning the lag. He found nothing from his break, something that would haunt him through the match. However, a miss on the 7 ball into the centre pocket from Van Berkel allowed him to clear for the early lead.

A miss on the 2 ball brought Van Berkel to the table and he finessed his way through the balls to level the match. Another dry break from Kostic, set up a messy rack which culminated in a nervy miss on the 9 ball down the rail from Lazar, and Van Berkel stepped in to take the lead. Kostic levelled the scores as he ran out the fourth game.

In the next, Kostic couldn’t get position on the 7 ball but his locked-up safety forced Van Berkel to bank. He made contact and left a difficult one up table which Kostic made and from there he regained the lead at 3-2. Van Berkel got back on track in the next as he broke and ran for 3-3.

Another dry break from Kostic left a great opportunity for Van Berkel. A positional error though, forced him into a safety and it was good enough to make Kostic miss to give up ball-in-hand. It was another confident clearance from the Dutchman as he assumed a 4-3 lead.

A cracking break from Van Berkel saw two balls drop and a shot on the 1 ball and he was able to once again run out to double his lead. Finally, Kostic delivered a successful break, this time from the opposite side of the table. There was nothing to be had but with a big wall of balls downtable, it was an easy snooker. Van Berkel escaped and fluked an impossible hook which Kostic did very well to escape from.

An aggressive bank shot from Van Berkel gave him the initiative and another good safety with three balls remaining, left him in a strong position. He took the rack to leave himself one away at 6-3.

A dry break from Mika kept Kostic in the game but it was a big task. A poor shot from Lazar saw him lose position but he had another chance when Van Berkel missed a delicate one on the 4 ball. It wasn’t to be Kostic’s day as ultimately missed the 9 ball to leave two balls for the gold medal for Van Berkel.

Van Berkel was naturally delighted with the win following his near miss on Thursday, “It’s a very good feeling especially after a loss in the straight pool final two days ago. It was more pressure after that but now I’m so glad and it feels so great.

“Coming from 6-1 down to win in the quarter-final gave me so much confidence. I still felt I could win that match and I kept that going. My goal was to win a medal in every discipline so I’m on track.”

Bronze medals went to Felix Vogel (GER) and Ivan Rudenko of Ukraine.

In the girls’ division it was Switzerland’s Shirin Volery who claimed her first ever European Championship gold medal as she led Jolien Schuurman (NED) throughout and cemented her spot in the forthcoming World Championships.

The 17-year-old had previously won a bronze in 9 ball in 2022, but she made no mistakes in Podčetrtek as she led 3-0 then 4-1 before sealing the deal in the seventh game.

Commented a delighted Volery, “I didn’t expect this for sure. I was feeling better than ever but not that good! I had a comeback in nearly every match especially the semi-final where I was 2-4 down so I was used to it. My parents were both crying at the end, they can’t believe it but they always support me. A lot of people had a part in me winning this medal so it’s a big win for everyone!”

Linnea Hjalmarstrom of Sweden and Germany’s Romina Lenk claimed the two bronze medals.

In the Under 17 match, Maks Bemko (14) won a thrilling encounter with Lithuania’s Revo Maimre that went right down to the wire. The young Slovenian was well-backed by the crowd and he got the better of the early exchanges to lead 3-1 in the race-to-six.

From there, though, there was never more than a rack to separate them and Benko reached the hill at 5-4. Each rack was a battle and Maimre levelled it before Maks took the decider in a rack in which they both had chances.

Not surprisingly Benko was drained but excited at the conclusion, “It was too crazy! There was a lot of pressure fighting for the World Championship spot but I made it so I’m very happy. You need to fight till the last ball, I believed in it and it happened. I really like 10 ball, it’s my best discipline but I’ll do my best in the 8-ball and 9-ball.”

Filling out the podium spots with bronze medals were Luka Bugarski of Serbia and Ąžuolas Tadaravicius of Lithuania.

Perfect Pongers Takes Maiden Euro Tour Title

19-YEAR-OLD Dutchman Yannick Pongers claimed his first-ever Euro Tour title as he got the better of Mario He (Austria) by 8-6 to capture the DYNAMIC BILLARD Podčetrtek Open. Pongers has got all the pedigree as junior, having won a host of European Youth Championship titles as well as being a WPA World Junior Champion but this was his first big title in the men’s game and fully deserved.

Pongers had suffered defeat early on in the event at the hands of Wojciech Szewczyk and had to battle through the one-loss side. He recorded good wins in the single-elimination over Mikael Oegaard, Marc Bijsterbosch and an 8-1 semi-final victory over fellow WPA Junior Champ Szymon Kural (Poland).
Mario He though was the toughest of propositions in the final, coming into the Euro Tour off the back of a 9-ball gold medal earlier in the week at the Dynamic Billard European Championships.

Playing 10-ball, Pongers got the final underway but his break was fruitless. He’s visit lasted just the single shot before Pongers cleared the table to take the opener. They both had visits in the next before Pongers left the 5 ball showing and from there Mario cleared to level the match.
Another loose safety from Pongers allowed He in and he worked his way through the table before running out of position on the 6 ball. He redeemed the situation with a jump shot and that left the 8 and 10 balls and he chose the safety option. Pongers though, cut it in and then deposited the 10 ball for a 2-1 lead.

It was He’s turn to come up dry on the break but with nothing available, they both exchanged safeties before He missed a 1/5 combination which Pongers himself made. From there he free-wheeled through the remaining balls for a 3-1 lead. A miss from Pongers in the next put the brakes on but He’s weak safety saw the Dutchman wedge the cue ball right behind the 5.He escaped but a long pot on the 4-ball got Pongers back in it and he cleared for an ominous 4-1 advantage. A great break from He saw three balls drop and a clear view of the low-numbered ball but he got out of position again and missed the 6 ball. Pongers needed no hesitation to move it to 5-1. In the next, Pongers played all the good shots but missed a straightforward long 5-ball into the top right pocket. It was a life-line for Mario who had started to look a little out of sorts. What should have been 6-1 was now 5-2.

Another superb break from He saw five balls drop and he banked the 1 ball in to give himself a real chance. A simple run out took the score to 5-3. Nothing dropped for Pongers on the next break and He was back in. From what looked like losing position, Mario was now just a single rack behind.
He got a ball down off the break in the next rack but the 1 ball was blocked. He pushed out, barely moving the cueball to leave Pongers a short jump shot. It was a strategic error from He as Pongers made it and proceeded to clear the table.

When he needed it, the break came good for Pongers as he dropped a ball and with a good spread, ran the table to reach the hill at 7-4. There was more jump shot magic from Pongers as he potted the 2 and 3 with consecutive table-length efforts. He sensed his chance, but missed the bank on the 3 ball, though. He didn’t let the opportunity slip as he ran out for 7-5.

Pongers stayed at the table following the break but a weak safety gave He a look with the jump cue. He made the shot but hooked himself behind the 8. His bank escape was a little clumsy and left the object ball on for Pongers. The Dutchman looked set again but it came to nothing, and Mario ultimately closed out the rack for 7-6.

He’s dry break gave Pongers a chance and a fortuitous snooker saw Mario miss the 3 ball off the rail to give ball-in-hand to Pongers and a golden opportunity to finish the match off. Looking a bundle of nerves, he held himself together for a terrific victory.

A delighted Pongers said, “I’m completely over the world! I really didn’t expect to win the Euro Tour, especially after my bad results at the European Championships so I can’t really describe how I feel.”

“I felt more comfortable with each match but I know that everyone can win, especially after the last 32 and last 16. It was just a bit of luck but also well played. I beat four big players on paper in a row and then into the final then it’s like ‘why not one more?’ I knew it would be difficult, I knew it would be hard but it happened.”

Altijd topfavoriet, of net iets daaronder.

10 BALL GOLD FOR SZOLNOKI, FILLER AND MALANOWSKI

THE SECOND DISCIPLINE completed this evening at the 2024 DYNAMIC BILLARDS European Championships in Slovenia as Oliver Szolnoki, Pia Filler and Emil Malanowski took the 10 ball gold medals after a long day’s play. Szolnoki (Hungary) defeated Niels Feijen 8-6, while Filler made light work of Spain’s Maria Teresa Ropero by 6-1 and in the wheelchair division, Malanowski (Poland) got the better of Slovenia’s Matej Brajkovic by 5-2.

In a match characterised by difficult layouts following the break, as well as tentative play from both players, it was Szolnoki who opened up the early 2-0 lead as neither player really asserted themselves. It was a confident Feijen who found his feet in the third rack as he cleared a difficult table to reduce the deficit to one rack.

A failed kick from Szolnoki gave Feijen a good look and he completed the run out to level the match. Following some quality safety play from both players, it was Feijen who had the first opportunity and he methodically worked his way around the table to take the lead for the first time at 3-2.

Despite having ball-in-hand, Feijen failed to convert in the next as he ran out of position and Szolnoki took advantage to tie the match up. He restored his lead in the next following a miss on the 8 ball by Feijen which presented the rack to Szolnoki.

The Hungarian potter took the next to restore his earlier two-rack lead before Feijen’s kicked escape from a safety left a makeable 2 ball for the Hungarian. He potted it, going rail first, and from there he completed the rack for a 6-3 lead.

There was some joy for Feijen in the next as he made a ball on the break and left himself a shot on the 1 ball. From there, he held it together to get the score back to 4-6. Feijen kept it going in the next as he eroded Szolnoki’s lead as the score stood at 6-5.

Szolnoki won the next rack though to reach the hill and then delivered the best break of the match that saw two balls drop. However, neither player could develop the table. Szolnoki had a good chance on the 1 ball but missed it to present a great opportunity to Feijen who made the most of it to get to 6-7.

However, that was to be Feijen’s final contribution as Szolnoki took the next to win the match and the coveted goal medal.

“I had to wait a long time for this gold. I lost a final in the Under 17 division, I lost a semi-final in the Under 19s, I lost a final in the Under 23 but finally I managed to win and it feels very good!

“I didn’t play the other disciplines, I only came for the 10 ball and the chance to qualify for the World Games, so I’m over the moon to finally get there and have a chance to experience that event. It was a risk but I live quite near and my opponent in the quarter-finals was playing in the 8 ball earlier in the day and I could rest for the match. Maybe I was more fresh.”

Bronze medals went to the German pair of Joshua Filler and Moritz Neuhausen.

Once again, it was Pia Filler who made it two gold medals from two events as she coasted through the women’s 10 ball final, defeating Spain’s Maria Teresa Ropero by 6-1. Filler, who had taken straight pool gold on Sunday evening, never looked threatened as she romped to the finish line, opening up a 5-0 lead.

The win completes the set for Pia Filler and she can now add her 10-ball gold medal to the 9 ball she won last year, the 8 ball in 2022 and of course, the straight pool gold she won earlier in the week.

The bronze medallists were Lena Primus (Austria), her second medal of the championships and Sweden’s Linnea Hjalmarstrom.

10 ball was the first medal event for the wheelchair players and it was Poland’s Emil Malanowski who took the honours, defeating local hope, Matej Brajkovic who was defending this title. 5-2 was the scoreline and it was Malanowski’s first European Championship gold medal, building on last year’s two bronzes.

Malanowski had earlier climbed a mountain in defeating wheelchair legend Henrik Larsson in the semi-final, while Brajkovic had put paid to multiple gold medallist Jouni Tahti’s hopes.

Commented the jubilant Pole, “This victory tastes so wonderful because before the semi-final, I wasn’t thinking about the final or the gold medal. Coming into the match, I had a very big headache so I just focused on my headache. Matej played very well for sure, but missed some easier shots and soon I was up 4-1, and I knew it would be hard to lose from there. I hope to sleep today but I’m not sure!”

Play continues on Thursday 11th July with the resumption of the 8 ball tournaments.

The flow was daar.
